What If You Accidentally Spilled Bleach on Half Your Wardrobe What if you spilled bleach on half your wardrobe? What would you do? Some hypothetical questions are so ridiculous we dismiss them as absurd, laughable queries. Sadly, though, the above question is not purely hypothetical. After returning from the final leg of our recent tour, fatigued and murky-headed from cross-country traversing, I separated my dirty laundry into appropriate piles, prepping each color-coded assemblage for its usual rinse and spin cycles. Then, unknowingly and stupidly, I spilled a bottle of liquid bleach on literally half the clothes, staining the floor-strewn heaps, instantly ruining the majority of my wardrobe. I was shocked by two things. First, I was shocked by my brainlessness. How could I make such a ridiculous mistake? Truth be told, I simply wasn’t paying attention. There’s no other explanation. If there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s that attention must be paid, even during the most mundane tasks. Second, I was shocked I wasn’t more horrified by my idiotic mistake. I should be outraged, right? Two years ago I would’ve been pissed; I would have fumed angrily and cursed the ceiling and hurled various breakable objects at one or more of my apartment’s walls. But last week, as sodium hypochlorite soaked through my threads, I didn’t react obnoxiously. Instead, I realized I couldn’t control everything. I took a few deep breaths, snatched a mop from my closet, and started cleaning the mess I’d made. The sooner we clean up our mess, the sooner we can move on with life. Sure, half my attire is ruined, but everything’s fine. I’ll replace some of the clothes if I need to, but my closet isn’t upset, and nor should I be. Those clothes were just clothesâ€"replaceable things that don’t have any more meaning than the meaning I give to them. There’s no case in crying over spilt milkâ€"or, in this caseâ€"spilt bleach. Now, go, go, go!Back in the day — as little as five years ago, according to Brenda Schuck Stover, executive director of the Center for Professional Development at Villanova School of Business — the bridge between theory and practice known as the summer internship came between junior and senior year. No longer. Now, she says,  career services staff are increasingly advising undergraduate business school stud ents to be ready to go to work right after their first year.  Why so early? Because companies are recruiting talent as early as freshman and sophomore year of college. On one hand, it gives them ample time to explore industries and companies and find what  best matches their interests, research that pays off when it comes time to choose an employer — and a career. So in essence, students and employers are given time to try one another out while placing students on a two-way street with employers.On the other hand, schools are worried students might narrow their choices rather than broaden them. â€Å"Think of a sophomore trying to make a decision and maybe haven’t even figured out their major,† says Karen Heise, interim director and employer relations manager at Washington Universitys Olin Business School’s Weston Career Center. â€Å"Firms are saying, ‘You don’t need to have crystal clarity, but we want you for the summer.’† â€Å"After a sophomore completes a summer internship, they may come out with an offer for next summer. If they accept it, this prohibits them from looking at other firms and almost closes the door to any other opportunity except for where theyà ¢â‚¬â„¢ve interned.† Villanova’s Brenda Stover also has concerns in this regard. â€Å"What I think is really, really difficult is, I don’t care how savvy they are in other ways, the human element of being an 18-year-old is they just want to say they have a job. We have an obligation to keep reminding them to be true to themselves, Stover says. Proactive Organizational Tips for Messy Student Desks

Neat desks are essential to help students build constructive study habits, organizational skills, and a clear mind for concentration. That positive feeling you get when you walk into your classroom in the morning and things are all straightened up from the afternoon before -- it works the same for students. When they have clean desks, they will feel good about school in general and the whole classroom has a better atmosphere for learning. Here are four organizational issues and the simple strategies that will help students keep their desks as neat and structured as possible.  Ã‚   1. Little Stuff is Everywhere The Solution: A plastic shoebox-size container, which can be bought at any big box store like Wal-mart or Target, is a cheap and lasting solution that keeps all of the little things together in one place. No more pencils, calculators, or crayons stuffed in the nooks and crannies of a desk. Once you buy a set of these containers, theyll last you years (and save you at least a dozen or more gray hairs!). 2. Loose Paper Explosions The Solution: If you look in your students desks and see countless loose papers flying all around, then you need a tried and true solution -- the Neat Folder. Its simple -- just give each student a folder in which to keep the loose papers that they will need again in the future. With all of the items consolidated, the inside of the desk assumes a more organized and sophisticated look. (Well, at least as sophisticated as a 30-year-old school desk can look.) Give students each color-coded folders that correlate with each subject. For example, a blue folder is for math, a red folder is for social studies, green  is for science, and orange is language arts. 3. There Isnt Enough Room The Solution: If there are simply too many items in your students desks, consider keeping some of the less-used books in a common area, to be distributed only when needed. Take a critical look at what youre asking children to store in their desks. If its too much for comfort, alleviate some of the items in competition for precious storage space. Every little bit makes a difference, so try creating space on the bookshelf just for student textbooks. This will help alleviate all of that extra clutter in their desks. 4. Students Just Wont Keep Their Desks Clean The Solution:  As soon as its tidied up, it transforms back into its formerly disastrous state. Some students just cant seem to keep their desks clean for any length of time.  Consider implementing a program of consequences and/or rewards to motivate the student to maintain the proper standards of desk cleanliness. Maybe the student has to miss recess, maybe he or she can work towards earning a privilege. Find a plan that works for that student and stick to it. Edited by Janelle Cox

Tyrant of Thebes Antigone, a play written by Sophocles, a writer of close to 123 plays, was written sometime between the years 496-406 B.C.E. A reoccurring theme in this play is the theme of rules. Throughout it’s many lines, a common conflict is portrayed as to whether to follow the rules of the gods, or to follow the rules of the state. Creon, being the King, feels that his say is final and everyone should respect and follow it, thus wishing to follow only the rules of the state. This ultimately leads to Creon ruling as a tyrant and only wishing to follow the irrational rules of man, which he put forth, as opposed to following the more rational rules of the gods. This essay will be discussing why Creon rules as a tyrant and how his excessive pride is what stands in his way of heeding the warnings and pleas of both Teiresias and Chorus before it was too late. Due to his inflated pride, best portrayed in the scene when Teiresias is first introduced, Creon shows how severely his pride gets in t he way of his judgment, which ultimately leads to the destruction of everything which makes him happy. Creon, King of Thebes in Antigone, may be best known to the reader as a tyrant who refuses to recognize the familial bond that Antigone has with her fallen brother. The class I observed was a third grade and the topic was body parts. This was my first time observing this class. What immediately noticed and called my attention was the excellent classroom management that the teacher has. At the beginning of the lesson, she caught students’ attention through a song that is related to the topic of the class. Also, she asks students to dance, which I think is excellent, because students were coming from the break with lot of energy and when they sang the song and move their bodies, they used that energy but at the same time they were focusing their attention on what the lesson was going to be about. Then, the teacher introduced keywords through flashcards. When she did it she asked students about what they saw in them and what I liked about it, is that she considers not just answers in English, but also in Spanish, but when they did it in Spanish she immediately said the word in English and asked student to repeat after her. When she was presenting the keywords she was putting them on the board and writing the names of every part of the body next to each flashcard and they were the whole lesson there, on the board, so when students had doubts they could resort to it. What I like about it was that it gave to students like a kind of confidence, because if they are shy and feel afraid of asking questions, they have the resources to answer the questions they could have by their own. Moreover, it can also provide independence to students when they are working on the tasks they have to do and in that way they can develop autonomy and do not depend all the time on the teacher. An aspect that I could notice and I consider extremely important in a Language class, is students’ participation. The teacher is always encouraging students to do so. During the lesson she asked students to play a game. The class was divided in groups, each row was a group. The game consisted of changing the order of the flashcards and students have to rearrange them putting the flashcards in the correct place (where the word of the part of the body was) the teacher asks students to say a number and at random (according to the number) a child had to go to the board to match one of the flashcards. If it was good, they row gained a point. This activity worked out very well, students were very motivated to participate and they could internalize the keywords. In the post activity, the teacher includes numbers, a topic that students had learnt previously. I consider it as something interesting because students put into practice not just the contents that they have learnt during that lesson, but also their previous knowledge. What they had to do was draw a monster. It monster was very meaningful for students because the teacher and them decided how it was going to be. The teacher asked students to say numbers, she wrote them next to each flashcard and according to that they had draw their monster. For example if next to the flashcard of the head was a four, the monster had to have four heads. Students work very well on this activity but the teacher did not check it in the class and did not close the lesson either. The lesson ended and the students did not have time to think what they had learnt. In general I consider that the class was very good, but there are certain aspects that I would improve. On one hand, the teacher do not speak the whole class in English, I know it is complicated to speak the whole class in English, when the students does not manage the language, and that sometimes when we are in front of the class and students are not understanding we tend to speak in Spanish, for them to understand and also because of classroom management; if students are not understanding they lose their attention and start doing another things such as speaking, drawing, etc. ut I believe it is important to try and believe in students; the can understands. Maybe, what English teachers could do is acting and be very explicit with their body language in order to make students understand or try to guess what is being explained. On the other hand, I could realize that the teacher did not pay attention to the children with special needs in the classroom. She just ignores their necessities and acts as if all the children were able to understand at the same time and in the same way. More than 80% of the Internet servers are run the UNIX based operating systems and this is done for various reasons. There exist various factors that conclude that UNIX OSs eclipse Microsoft OSs in terms of their performance on Internet servers. First and foremost of all is Security. Security is pivotal in Internet servers. UNIX is innately more secure than Windows, be it on a server or in an embedded environment. This is in regard with the fact that UNIX was designed essentially to be a multiuser OS (Dedeke, 2009). Thus, only the administrator, or the root user, has administrative privileges, and users do not have the authority to access the kernel. Meanwhile, users of a Window OS can intentionally skin data from the administrator. Furthermore, UNIX OSs get attacked by viruses malwares less frequently than Microsoft OSs and it is faster and easier to de tect vulnerabilities in UNIX systems than in Microsoft systems. Second factor of UNIXs superiority over Microsoft is Stability. UNIX based systems are well applauded for their ability to perform for years without malfunctioning. Reports even suggest that some of the users have never experienced a crash in their history of usage of UNIX. Thus, UNIX systems are great for companies for which even a small downtime can have grave consequences. UNIX systems can also handle a large number of processes running at once much better than Windows (Microsoft OS); i.e. UNIX is better at multitasking than Microsoft OS. This tends to degrade Microsoft OSs stability quickly. Changes in configuration in Microsoft OSs generally requires a reboot (that results in downtime), whereas theres no need to reboot the UNIX system to make configuration changes, also it doesnt affect unrelated services like windows does. Moving from performance to costs, two important factors are Hardware and TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). To accommodate Microsoft OSs ever increasing resource demands, it typically tends to require frequent hardware upgrades, whereas UNIX systems are slim, flexible and scalable, and perform admirably on almost all computers, regardless of their processor or infrastructure (Hong Rezende, 2012). UNIX systems can be easily reconfigured in order to include only the services that are required by the companys purposes, thus plummeting memory requirements and enhancing performance. There is no comparison to UNIX in terms of total cost of ownership as the OS is generally free. A normal Microsoft OS is more expensive than an enterprise UNIX OS purchased with corporate support as Microsoft OSs include user-based licensing and a cluster of other add-ons, specifically for security. Now coming to a rather supplementary advantage of UNIX systems over Microsoft systems, that being Freedom. With UNIX systems there arent any commercial merchants trying to commit you into some specific prod ucts. Instead the user is free to amalgamate and use whatever works best for the company. To conclude UNIX systems have the upper hand over Microsoft systems in the area of performance (security stability) as well as cost (hardware TCO). Viewing these advantages, its no wonder governments, corporations and big MNCs rely on the open source OS (UNIX) in their own servers (Blommers, 1999). Six months before the Games were to begin, not a single country had responded to the official invitations. Then they started to trickle in. The world was mired in the Great Depression which made the expense of traveling to California seem nearly as insurmountable as the distance. Neither had many of the spectator tickets been sold and it seemed that the Memorial Coliseum, which had been expanded to 105,000 seats for the occasion, would be relatively empty. Then, a few Hollywood stars (including Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, and Mary Pickford) offered to entertain the crowd and ticket sales picked up. Los Angeles had constructed the very first Olympic Village for the Games. The Olympic Village consisted of 321 acres in Baldwin Hills and offered 550 two-bedroom portable bungalows for the male athletes, a hospital, post office, library, and a large number of eating establishments to feed the athletes. The female athletes were housed in the Chapman Park Hotel downtown, which offered more luxuries than the bungalows. The 1932 Olympic Games also debuted the first photo-finish cameras as well as the victory platform. There were two minor incidents worth reporting. Finnish Paavo Nurmi, who had been one of the Olympic heroes in the past several Olympic Games, was considered to have turned professional, thus was not allowed to compete. While mounted on the victory platform, Italian Luigi Beccali, winner of the gold medal in the 1,500-meter race, gave the Fascist salute. Mildred Babe Didrikson made history at the 1932 Olympic Games. Babe won the gold medal for both the 80-meter hurdles (new world record) and the javelin (new world record)  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹and won silver in the high jump. Grant Wood And American Gothic Film Analysis Grant Wood is easily one of Americas most famous artists due to his iconic 1930 work American Gothic. Even today, while some people may not always remember Grant Woods name or even the title of the image, they most certainly always recognize American Gothic when they see it. This one painting is known worldwide as kind of an iconic show of American character, all represented by a farmer and his daughter in front of their carpenter gothic styled home. The painting itself may at first glance appear to have only the simple meaning of representing the small town folk of Iowa, but looking closer the meaning could be something deeper. Grant Wood was born on February 13, 1991 in Anamosa, Iowa. After his fathers death in 1901, Grant and his family moved to Cedar Rapids where he took art lessons from local artists while he was in high school. He would then later teach school near Cedar Rapids while working a job at a silversmith shop in Chicago. Grant also served in World War I. He would make clay models of their field guns and also helped camouflage artillery pieces. After the war he would come back to Europe in 1923 where he spent 14 months in Paris studying art. During his stay in Europe his paintings had an impressionistic style to them. When he came home to America, his paintings began to sell and he was able to quit teaching and focus on his art. Its sometime during this time that Grant began promoting regionalism in his art. Regionalism is a realist modern American art movement wherein artists shunned the city and rapidly developing technological advances to focus on scenes of rural life. His work began to har k back onto his early life on the farm before his father died. Grants paintings began featuring farmlands, townscapes, and people around where he lived. Then, while driving to Eldon, Iowa, Grant came upon a white frame home that inspired his famous painting American Gothic. Grant had his sister and their local dentist pose in front of the house, and painted them with a very detailed style during which a time most artists in America were painting in abstraction. The painting itself only took about three months for Grant to paint and it was an immediate success. American Gothic was the painting that got Grant Wood recognized as a respectable artist, because he was all but ignored before this work. None of Grants other works were ever as successful. He soon then entered the painting into the Art Institute of Chicago for a competition, and the painting was awarded the Norman Wait Harris bronze medal and then purchased by the institute for $300. This was Grants first major art sell and his first prize for any work he had done, and in 1931 American Gothic was exhibited in London and was met with equal success. The painting was soon being reproduced in newspapers, but received backlash when it was printed in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Iowans who were reading the paper were outraged that they were being depicted as pinched, grim-faced, puritanical Bible-thumpers There was a large amount of negative response from many women in Iowa who were angry about the way Grant depicted the farmers daughter. These women considered the depiction mean and unflatt ering. Grant defended himself, saying that his intention was never to poke fun at anyone, and that the image is really just his own personal depiction of Americans. People who had positive reactions towards American Gothic assumed the painting was more of a satire of the simple life people lived in small rural towns, which was once not thought worthy of high art. American Gothic did make Grant a recognizable artist, but with recognition came harsh criticism. He was accused of creating mass appeal art, and that its viewers could easily understand the content of the paintings. Grant Woods workà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦contributes nothing scientically, emotionally, or esthetically to art or society. It is the culmination of a trend of escapist and isolationist thought which was popular with some groups of yesterday, but which is definitely obsolete today. Its true, his rise of popularity was fast, but after his death in 1942 his fall of popularity was just as equally quick. During the 50s people felt like Woods art was too populist, and that it was always popular among the simple people. What exactly is American Gothic really trying to say? Grant painted the image in 1930, the same year as the start of the Great Depression. Its because the work was created at such dark times in American history that people relate it to the population in the 1930s. In a country mired in economic depression, Woods stoic couple embodied the bedrock values of the nation and the resolve needed to survive the crisis. People could relate to the image, the man standing firmly with his pitchfork, defending his home. Something many people were doing during the 1930s, just trying to defend and keep what is theres. However after a couple of years American Gothics success had dropped and was out of the public eye for about a decade. The image was still a symbol of strength for Americans during crisis during that time. In 1957, for the production Music Man, Meredith Wilson had his actors pose in the same way as Grants figures in American Gothic. Soon after that a cartoonist, Charles Addams, featur ed the figures of American Gothic in one of his New Yorker cartoons. By this time the image became somewhat of a universal image of just plain folk of America. When the civil rights began, the image then took another turn for interpretation. Now, its no longer just or plain folk, the people of the image became symbols for something more. To some people they had become symbols of right-wing and even racist America. The meaning behind the painting seems to always change for different generations depending on the situations the generations are facing, because people always tend to relate works of art to their current situations. Even though the meaning does change, American Gothic is still one of Americas most well known, as well as most parodied, work of art. Honestly the image itself could be interpreted in many different directions because Grant himself took on many different contemporary social issues that are still being debated today. The very title suggests Americas long-standing ambivalent relationship with Europe. The Iowa subject matter pushes to the surface the tension and the mutual lock of understanding that exists between urban and rural America during the Great Depression and that persists today. The image also raises the specter of political partisanship and variant social values. Today American Gothic doesnt necessarily speak of the Midwest, or even of Iowa, and its most likely that people of today dont even realize where the painting is set. But when people look at American Gothic, some just cannot help but smile. This could be why the image is parodied and referenced in so many various ways. American Gothic is indeed one of the most popular pieces of art to ever be parodied so many times. The parodies of the image have all kinds of different purposes. Some might address a specific opinion or viewpoint, and others are just made for nothing more than comedy effect and fun. The first American Gothic parody was most likely the production Music Man, when the characters pose exactly like the man and his daughter in front of their home. The painting made its way onto a General Country Corn Flakes cereal box in the early 60s. The image made its way into an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, where an actual parody of the picture is a part of the episodes plot. The producers used American Gothic because they needed a painting that would be instantly recognizable to an American sitcom audience. It was also used in a promotion add for the Beverly Hillbillies for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, that featured the characters of the show in the same iconic poses as the painting. Many of the decades parodies represented a joking type of attitude toward convections, traditions, authorities, and icons. Some even ridiculed the images and written works they parodied. American Gothic seemed to be more used as a weapon than as a target in its parodies. Almost all of American Gothic parodies-from presidents and first ladies to Mickey and Minnie Mouseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦operate with the same basic conceit. They manipulate the details of the original, usually the faces, often the clothingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦either to signify the difference between the then of the painting and the now of the parody or to collapse those difference. When it comes to parodies, it really goes back to how people were and still are interpreting the meaning behind American Gothic. The painting is an icon of the American People, and many people have their own interpretations, but the real meaning may always remain unanswered. Grant Wood was an artist who connected with the simple folk of Midwest America in his lifetime through his regionalistic styled art. His image American Gothic is most known for being a symbolic work for the 1930s for being a portrayal of the American pioneer spirit. The image remains a popular iconic image, keeping people interested in its deeper meaning with people creating parodies by relating the work to current events.

Justice to a Society Against Racism

Racism is a long time issue which has been existing for more than a century. Cases have been taken to the courts in order to bring justice to the society against racism. â€Å"Separate but equal† is a legislature that was being put into the constitution in 1792. It disrupted the society due to how it(law) was interpreted by the people. Although the American law for equal rights has been written in the constitution since 1792, most people even the authoritative ones(i. e. ; judges) never put it in practice. The cry for equal justice for minority groups is so extensive especially in the south where the KKK(Ku Klux Klans) are more in existence. Some of the legal issues about these outcries are the 1896 ‘Plessy vs. Ferguson† and the 1954 ‘Brown vs. the Board The Plessy vs. Ferguson case was a very crucial argument which argued the ‘separate but equal† issue in the State of Louisiana. Even though Plessy, a 30-year old shoemaker was mix of seven-eighths white and one-eighths black he was still considered â€Å"black† and punished for entering the wrong car by being jailed. When taken the case to the State court, Plessy argued that the 14th Amendment has been violated which states that: â€Å"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive †¦. † But the Louisiana Statute overturned his case stating that the state has its rights to regulate railway companies that operate only in its state and Plessy was found guilty. Plessy was a normal human being who was taken his rights away from him just for the cause of his race. The Louisiana Statute overlooked Plessy†s petition regarding justice against segregation which deteriorates the social equality of the society. The Courts deprived the liberty of the plaintiff†s equal protection of the laws regardless of the 14th Amendment in Constitution. Even when taken to the Supreme Court of the country, they still found Plessy guilty and overturned the case. After 55 years of the case, Thurgoode Marshall a black lawyer from Baltimore, Maryland took the case for a re-affirmation. Following the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the Plessy†s case in 1896, many Negroes from different states decided to fight for equal rights as they all deserved. The Brown vs. Board of Education was one of the most significant cases brought before the courts which formerly cannot legislate social equality. The case turned to be similar to the altercation about the 14th Amendment which so arguably had an impact on the society. The argument was about a colored fifth grader in Topeka, Kansas, Linda Brown who was denied an admission into a white elementary school. The people(black Americans) wanted desegregation and not segregation especially in public schools which did not value their freedoms as citizens of United States. When the case and some other similar cases from other states were taken to the high court in Kansas in 1951 by Thurgood Marshall and his colleagues, the courts indentured it. Until taken to the Supreme Court which the decisions did not come out that easy, the fourteenth amendment was brought into question. For almost two years the case was argued and re-affirmed. Though the Board of Education may have supplied equal physical facilities to both public schools (white and Negroes). It diminishes the equal treatment of the minority groups, an example of this is the textbooks issues which when compared 68 colored students had no books to 20 white students. And also the case that there was no coloured High School in the South. The cases were similar in respects that the minorities had to come out with the complaints of their oppressions. Their(minorities) liberties have been deprived from them under the protection of laws. Although the legal arguments share common cases about segregation, but Plessy†s case was one in which was indentured regardless of whom he poses to be. While Brown†s complaints were out to pursue equality in educational system and to reduce the inferiority complex going through the minds of innocent souls on how they are being treated. Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP crew argued that even though the law has abolished slavery for a guaranteed freedom, they(coloreds) were still segregated from the whites. The end of the segregated years marked the beginning of a new era for equality among all races. Thurgood Marshall and the members of the NAACP fought to their very strength to bring justice in both cases and to see that segregation is purely abolished. These legal arguments were some of the greater social decisions and most ideological significants in the American history that the Supreme Court has ever made.
